Psalm 44

Out of the Depths (130)

`We have heard_ with our / ears, O God;

our `ancestors have / told~ us

what `work you did_ / in their days,

`in the / days of old.

`You drove out the nations / with your hand,

`but you / planted them.

`You afflicted / the~ peoples,

`but you / set them free.

(Ref)

For `they did not possess the land by / their own sword,

`neither did their own_ arm_ / save~ them;

but `by your right_ hand, your arm, and the light / of your face,

be `cause_ you delighted / in~ them.

O `God, you / are my King.

Com `mand_ victories for / Ja~ cob!

Through `you, we will push back our / adversaries.

`Through your name_, we will tread down those who rise_ up a / gainst~ us.

`For I will not trust_ / in my bow,

`neither will my sword_ / save~ me.

But `you have saved us from our / adversaries,

`and have shamed_ / those who hate us. +

In `God_ we have made our boast_ / all day long.

`We will give thanks to your / name forever.

Selah.

But `now you have rejected us_, and dis / graced~ us,

and `do not go out / with our armies.

You `make us turn back from the / adversary.

`Those who hate us take_ plunder / for themselves.

`You have made us like_ sheep to / be devoured,

`and have scattered us a / mong the nations.

`You_ sell your people / for~ nothing,

`and have gained_ nothing / from their sale.

(Ref)

You `make us a reproach_ / to our neighbors,

the `scorn_ and derision of_ those who / are around us.

`You make us a by_ word a / mong the nations,

a `laughingstock a / mong the peoples.

`All day long_ my disgrace_ is be / fore~ me,

and `shame_ covers / my~ face,

`at the voice of one who taunts_ / and reviles,

be `cause_ of the enemy and / the avenger.

`All_ this has come on us, yet we have not for / gotten you.

`We have not been false_ to your / covenant.

Our `heart has / not turned back,

`neither have our steps_ strayed_ / from your path, +

though `you have crushed us in the / haunt of jackals,

and `covered us_ with the shadow / of~ death.

(Ref)

`If we have forgotten the_ name_ / of our God,

`or spread out our hands_ to a / strange~ god,

`will_ God not / search this out?

`For he knows the secrets / of the heart.

`Yet for your sake we are being put to death_ / all day long.

`We_ are regarded as_ sheep_ / for the slaughter.

Wake `up!_ Why_ do you / sleep~, Lord?

A `rise! Do not reject_ / us forever.

`Why_ do you / hide your face,

`and forget_ our affliction and_ / our oppression?

`For we are bowed down_ / to the dust.

Our `body clings_ / to the earth. +

`Rise_ up to / help~ us.

Re `deem us for your loving / kindness’ sake.
