Psalm 55

In My Distress (120)

`Listen to my / prayer, O God.

`Do not hide yourself_ from my / supplication.

At `tend to me, and / answer me.

`I am restless in_ / my complaint.

I `moan because of the voice of the / enemy,

be `cause of the oppression / of the wicked.

For `they bring suffering_ / on~ me.

In `anger they_ hold a grudge a / gainst~ me.

(Ref)

`My heart is severely / pained within me.

The `terrors of_ death have fallen / on~ me.

`Fearfulness and trembling have come / on~ me.

`Horror has_ over / whelmed~ me.

`I said, “Oh that I had wings_ / like a dove!

Then `I would fly away, and / be at rest.

`I would flee_ / far away.

`I would lodge_ in the / wilderness.”

Selah. +

`“I would hurry / to a shelter

`from the raging / wind and storm.”

Con `fuse them, Lord_, and con / found their speech,

`for I have seen violence and strife_ / in the city.

`Day and night they prowl around_ / on its walls.

`Malice and abuse are also / within her. +

De `structive forces are with / in~ her.

`Threats and lies do not depart_ / from her streets.

For `it is not an enemy_ / who insults me,

`then I / could endure it.

`It is not a foe who rises / up against me,

`otherwise_ / I could hide.

(Ref)

But `it is you, a / man like me,

`my companion, and_ my fa / miliar friend.

We `used to have sweet fellowship to / geth~ er.

We `walked into the house of God_ / with the throng.

Let `death come suddenly_ / on~ them. • Let `them go down alive_ / into Sheol.

For `wickedness_ is among them, / in their dwelling.

`As for me_, I will / call on God.

The `LORD will / save~ me.

`Evening, morning, and at noon_, I will cry out / in distress.

`He will / hear my voice.

`He_ has redeemed me in_ safety from the battle that_ / was against me,

al `though_ there are many / who oppose me. +

`God, who is enthroned forever, will_ hear and / humble them.

They `never change and do not / fear~ God.

Selah.

(Ref)

`My companion raises his_ hands a / gainst his friends.

`He has violated his_ / covenant.

His `mouth was smooth as butter, but_ war was / in his heart.

His `words were softer than_ oil, yet they were / drawn~ swords.

`Cast your burden on the LORD and he_ / will sustain you.

`He will never al_ low the righteous / to be moved.

But `you, O God, will / bring them down

in `to the pit_ / of destruction. +

`Blood_ thirsty and deceitful ones shall not live out_ / half their days,

but `I will / trust in you.
